Actually Oriley, that was the way things were done fifty years ago.  And stocks were traded.  When you bought shares a certificate was issued and you kept it until you wanted to sell.  You could then call the broker and sell the shares and you had a couple of days to deliver the certificate.  And why would you think it would be expensive?
