ANS President Hoffman Announces Presidential Citations

LA GRANGE PARK, Ill., Oct. 15, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The late Admiral Eugene P. Wilkinson is among seven recipients of the 2013 Presidential Citations awarded by ANS President Donald R. Hoffman.

Admiral Wilkinson's career was highlighted by many achievements including being the first commander of a nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus in 1954. Then in 1961 he became the first commander of a nuclear surface ship, the USS Long Beach. Additionally in 1980 he was named the first President and CEO of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations.

Other recipients of the Presidential Citation this year include William Corcoran, Audeen Fentiman, Eric Loewen, David Matthews, Michaele Brady Raap, and Theodore Rockwell.

"This year I wanted to recognize the individuals who contributed to the foundation in nuclear science and technology, and those who will be leading those efforts for decades to come," said ANS President Donald R. Hoffman.

The honorees will be presented with their awards at the 2013 ANS Winter Meeting in Washington, D.C. on Monday, November 11th. The citations will be given during the President's Special Session, which will highlight the 75th anniversary of the discovery of fission, and include remarks from The Honorable Allison Macfarlane, Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Dr. Susan E. Eisenhower, Chairman Emeritus of the Eisenhower Institute, and many others.

ANS Presidential Citations, bestowed solely by the President, may honor one or more individuals who, in their opinion, have demonstrated outstanding effort in some manner for the benefit of the American Nuclear Society and/or the nuclear community.
