LEMMINKÄINEN SIGNS AGREEMENT FOR ALLIANCE CONTRACT FOR THE RANTAVÄYLÄ TUNNEL IN TAMPERE Lemminkäinen has signed an agreement for the implementation phase of the alliance contract for the Rantaväylä tunnel in Tampere. The implementation of the project will be carried out by a consortium formed by Lemminkäinen, A-Insinöörit Suunnittelu Oy and Saanio & Riekkola Oy. The project customer is the City of Tampere, which has authorised the Finnish Transport Agency to act as its representative for the duration of the project. The target cost for the project is EUR 180.3 million, inclusive of the costs of the development phase. The work will begin in October and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2017. In addition to the construction of the actual 2.3-kilometre tunnel, the project includes graded interchanges in Santalahti and Naistenlahti along with the related road arrangements. The construction of the Rantaväylä tunnel between Santalahti and Naistenlahti will contribute to the development of the Tampere city centre and improve the flow of traffic on Highway 12. The contract will be executed under the alliance model, which is based on a joint agreement between the customer, the contractor and the designers on the project’s target costs, other key objectives and risk allocation. The agreement for the implementation phase was signed by Head of Department Pekka Petäjäniemi and Project Manager Mauri Mäkiaho on behalf of the Finnish Transport Agency, Group Director Kari Kankaala and City Lawyer Jouko Aarnio on behalf of the City of Tampere, Executive Vice President, Infrastructure Construction Harri Kailasalo on behalf of Lemminkäinen, CEO Reijo Riekkola on behalf of Saanio & Riekkola Oy, and CEO Heikki Käkönen on behalf of A-Insinöörit Suunnittelu Oy. The consortium formed by Lemminkäinen, A-Insinöörit Suunnittelu Oy and Saanio & Riekkola Oy was selected as the alliance partner for the Highway 12 Tampere Rantaväylä tunnel in June 2012. The first phase, which lasted approximately one year, consisted of preparing the project implementation plan and determining the target cost of the implementation as well as the project's key objectives. In the development phase, the road construction plan was developed in co-operation between all alliance partners, resulting in innovations that produce substantial cost savings. "By working as a team comprised of the customer, designer and constructor, we were able to achieve substantial cost savings through the development of innovative design solutions and work plans. We see alliance-based co-operation models as an excellent opportunity to improve productivity in the construction industry. This project will also have a significant employment effect in the region," says Harri Kailasalo, Executive Vice President for Infrastructure Construction at Lemminkäinen.
