SIX FORMER SURGEONS GENERAL ADDRESS GAPS IN HEALTH

ATLANTA, Oct. 3, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Marking the 50th anniversary of the first US Surgeon General's report on smoking and health, today the 16th US Surgeon General and Director of the Morehouse School of Medicine's (MSM) Satcher Health Leadership Institute (SHLI) David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D . will host a day long forum entitled, "Underserved and High Risk Populations in the United States: Taking Action for Comprehensive Primary Health Care Renewal." The program will begin at 8:30 a.m. on MSM's campus in the auditorium of the Louis W. Sullivan National Center for Primary Care.

"My goal in this discussion will be to provide options around topics surrounding everything from transformative strategic approaches to strengthening partnerships, promoting health policies to support access to quality health care and achievement of health equity," said host Dr. David Satcher.

Sponsored by the Aetna Foundation , this forum will include a panel discussion with former U.S. Surgeons General entitled, "Celebrating 50 Years of Surgeons General Reports: Preparing Leadership for Health Equity," a keynote speech by Charles Moore, M.D. CEO of The HEALing Community Center, and a dialogue featuring leading health practitioners and philanthropists addressing comprehensive strategies to reduce health disparities among underserved populations, evidence-based and promising practices in the field and ongoing humanitarian efforts.

The panel discussion with the former U.S. Surgeons General will last from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and will include a discussion of the impact of the landmark 1964 Surgeon's General Report concerning tobacco and subsequent reports on the health of Americans and opportunities for health care leadership to strengthen health care quality and access.
