Optimism Among Global SMEs: Insights from Alibaba.com

Optimism Among Global SMEs: Insights from Alibaba.com

SMEs Worldwide Are Growing More Optimistic

New research from Alibaba.com points to a clear shift in mood among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) around the world. The latest Global SME Confidence Index, which surveyed more than 2,000 decision-makers across countries, finds businesses more upbeat about growth prospects than they’ve been in some time—more confident, and more ready to act.

Confidence Is Rising—With Standout Gains in Europe

Overall, 69% of respondents say they feel more positive now than they did six months ago. That momentum is especially notable in Germany, where 74% of SMEs report optimism about future growth. France isn’t far behind: 65% of French SMEs share that forward-looking view.

New Products Are Fueling the Momentum

One reason for the brighter outlook: fresh offerings on the way. Nearly half of all SMEs surveyed—45%—plan to introduce one or two new product lines within the next year. It’s a practical bet on what comes next. New SKUs can open doors to new customers and shore up existing relationships, especially when markets are moving quickly.

The Hurdles Are Real: Inflation, Customer Acquisition, and Supply Chains

Optimism doesn’t erase the headwinds. Rising inflation remains the top concern, cited by 38% of participants. Finding and winning new customers is another sticking point for 31% of SMEs, who say marketing and acquisition are getting tougher. And for 25%, supply chain disruptions are still a critical pressure point, threatening the pace and sustainability of growth.

Turning to Digital Channels to Find What’s Next

To navigate those pressures, many SMEs are leaning on digital tools. A majority—52%—say they’re using online B2B marketplaces to spot new and innovative products. More than half also plan to put social media to work for market engagement and direct customer interaction, meeting buyers where attention already lives.

AI Moves From Idea to Imperative

Advanced technology is part of that pivot. Twenty-four percent of respondents emphasize the need for full artificial intelligence (AI) integration within the next three to five years. For these businesses, AI isn’t a buzzword; it’s a practical way to stay competitive, streamline operations, and connect with customers more effectively.

Super September: A Timely Push for Global Trade

Riding this current of optimism, Alibaba.com has kicked off its annual Super September trade show, a month-long event designed to connect buyers and suppliers worldwide. The timing matters: it helps businesses discover products and source efficiently just ahead of the holiday season. Early signals are strong, too—orders in the first week rose 69% compared with the same period last year, suggesting deep engagement and active demand.

Connecting a Vast Network, With Better Ways to Showcase

Super September brings together a global network of over 200,000 suppliers and more than 48 million buyers. The marketplace keeps investing in visibility and discovery, using tools like livestreaming and virtual reality to show product lines in richer detail. Those formats make it easier for buyers and suppliers to interact, ask questions, and move from interest to order.

About Alibaba.com

Founded in 1999, Alibaba.com is a global B2B e-commerce platform that connects suppliers and buyers across markets and industries. Its focus is straightforward: give businesses the tools to reach more customers, find products faster, and place orders with less friction—so growth can follow.
