Norsk Hydro's Major Hydropower Initiative
Recently, Norsk Hydro has made waves in the renewable energy sector by finalizing its largest hydropower project in over two decades. The Illvatn pumped storage power plant is set to commence construction this November, with a projected operational start in 2030.
Investment and Production Goals
Located in a promising area, this new pumped storage facility is expected to generate an additional 107 GWh of renewable energy annually. Specifically, it aims to support Hydro’s aluminium production efforts. The total projected investment in this ambitious project is NOK 2.5 billion; however, due to the cash flow tax benefits associated with hydropower in Norway, Hydro's net investment will be a more manageable NOK 1.2 billion.
Kari Ekelund Thørud's Insights on Sustainable Choices
Kari Ekelund Thørud, the Executive Vice President of Hydro Energy, expressed the significance of renewable energy in today’s context. "This investment marks our most considerable commitment to our hydropower portfolio since the New Tyin power plant project in 2004. The Illvatn plant will not only enhance our energy production but also increase reservoir capacity and installed power capacity at our Fortun facilities. We are dedicated to setting a new benchmark for responsible hydropower development, striving for a net-zero impact on prioritized nature," Thørud assured.
Enhancing Power System Balance
The planned Illvatn power plant will function by transferring water from the Fivlemyrane reservoir, situated at an elevation of 1,018 meters, up to the Illvatn reservoir at 1,382 meters above sea level. This ambitious project includes creating a new tunnel to facilitate this water transfer, while simultaneously allowing for a reduction in the minimum regulated water level at Illvatn. By utilizing this water efficiently during peak summer months, Hydro aims to enhance overall production during winter, when energy demand is at its peak.
Innovative Infrastructure Development
As part of this project, Hydro plans to establish a 13-kilometer power line from Fivlemyr to Sveinsøystølen. Notably, 48 power towers will be constructed using aluminium, a progressive approach that replaces traditional materials with more sustainable options, signifying a new trend in power grid development.
Supporting Industrial Growth through Renewable Energy
With the drive for industrial excellence, access to renewable energy is essential for Norway to maintain its global leadership in various sectors. To effectively reduce emissions in the existing industries and foster new ventures, there is a critical need for more renewable energy sources. The Illvatn facility is an integral part of Hydro's energy strategy, ensuring a steady supply for aluminium production in Norway.
Thørud emphasized, "To secure jobs and foster industrial development, we must expand our power and grid infrastructure. Our commitment as an industrial leader is to significantly enhance power availability, achieving competitive pricing for all Hydro's aluminium plants in Norway."
Hydro's Sustainability Goals
Currently, Hydro's aluminium production in Norway boasts a carbon footprint approximately 75% lower than the global average, exemplifying the company's dedication to sustainability. The long-term goal for Hydro is ambitious yet bold: achieving zero carbon aluminium production by 2050.
