Nordic Cities Shine Amid Global Decline in Urban Greenery

Husqvarna Group recently unveiled an insightful report focusing on urban green spaces worldwide, using cutting-edge AI and satellite technology. This report reveals alarming statistics that the 516 cities analyzed have lost a significant amount of green areas, nearly equivalent to the size of Paris. However, there is a silver lining; the Nordic region is emerging as a global green leader with sustainable and flourishing urban environments.

Husqvarna Group's Urban Green Space Insights (HUGSI) report has been tracking urban green space evolution since 2019. This year's analysis includes 516 cities across 80 countries, offering crucial insights on lusher urban greenery during each city's greenest day of the year. From small towns in the Netherlands to sprawling megacities like Chongqing in China, the report paints a comprehensive picture of global urban greenery.

The findings show varying averages of green coverage; for instance, South and West Asia average only 25%, while Europe boasts a significantly higher average of 46%. Notably, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia possesses a mere 1% green coverage, contrasting sharply with several European cities that exceed 60% greenery.

"Understanding the dynamics of urban greenery is vital as cities grow and change. It’s essential that we prioritize the development of these crucial green spaces in urban planning to foster sustainable living environments," states Erik Swan, green space specialist at Husqvarna Group.

Global Trend: Urban Green Space Loss

In a concerning trend, the analyzed cities experienced a loss of approximately 95 million m² of green space between the years analyzed—almost the equivalent area of Paris. This decline is primarily attributed to human activities, especially urban expansion and construction. A startling 73% of the cities showed negative outcomes in urban green space development. On a more positive note, about 45 million m² of new or improved green space has been introduced, largely through expanded grass cover, which often results from environmental conditions rather than concerted greening initiatives.

Notably, cities in the Northern Hemisphere tend to have more green spaces than those in the South. Currently, Europe averages 46% urban greenery. Unfortunately, even in this region, the net change reported across 418 cities is negative, with losses indicating more than 30 million m² gone, leading to a staggering loss equivalent to 1,800 football fields. Cities such as Aarhus (Denmark), Sunderland (UK), and Chisinau (Moldova) exhibit notable green space growth, with Vilnius, a capital city, topping European rankings with 61% green space allocation and significant tree canopy coverage.

The Nordic Region: A Beacon of Green Practices

Amid these global trends, Nordic cities stand out as champions of urban greenery, boasting an average of 49% green space cover. This figure is greater than Europe’s overall average, highlighting that nearly half of the urban land area in the 40 largest Nordic cities is dominated by vegetation. Interestingly, the Nordic region has experienced a lesser loss of green space compared to the rest of Europe, recording a net reduction of only 385,000 m². Vejle, Denmark, leads as the greenest city in the Nordics with an impressive 58% green coverage.

Additionally, Aarhus has been recognized for significant positive changes, contributing nearly 1.2 million m² of new greenery. The urban tree canopy cover in Nordic cities averages 35%, with Finland proudly holding the highest coverage at 44%. Even though Denmark may have fewer urban trees at 24%, it still maintains some of the greenest cities around.

Erik Swan emphasizes the value of green spaces, stating, "Not only do trees enrich urban landscapes, but they also play critical roles in improving air quality, supporting biodiversity, and enhancing the mental and physical health of city inhabitants." The importance of greenery in urban strategy cannot be overstated.

Key Insights from HUGSI 2025

The report encapsulates several key statistics, reflecting the health of urban green spaces globally:

  • Urban Green Space by Region: Europe: 46%, Nordics: 49%, Central East Asia: 39%, North America: 37%, Africa: 30%, Latin America: 29%, East & Southeast Asia and Oceania: 27%, South & West Asia: 25%.
  • Global Loss of Green Space: 95 million m² overall, with Europe experiencing a decline of 13.3 million m² and the Nordics seeing a loss of 385,000 m².
  • Tree Canopy Cover in Nordic Cities: Finland: 44%, Sweden: 36%, Norway: 33%, Denmark: 24%.

Across the globe, there exists a pressing need to address urban green space loss constructively. Emphasizing changes and adopting sustainable practices can pave the way for healthier, greener cities for future generations. The reporting from Husqvarna Group aids stakeholders in recognizing these challenges and in sculpting a greener path forward.
