Nel ASA's Green Hydrogen Innovations Set to Transform Industry

Nel ASA Takes Major Steps Towards Hydrogen Production Expansion

Nel ASA (OSE: NEL) has made a significant advancement in the clean hydrogen space by deciding to industrialize its Next Generation Pressurized Alkaline platform. Following a remarkable development journey spanning seven years, the company is now ready to initiate construction at its Herøya facility, focusing on a production capacity of up to 1 GW for this groundbreaking technology. This initiative has received backing from the EU Innovation Fund, underscoring its importance in the effort for sustainable energy solutions.

A Breakthrough in Hydrogen Production

The development of the Next Generation Pressurized Alkaline system began in 2018, with Nel conducting extensive testing of smaller prototypes before moving to full-scale assessments. The prototype has demonstrated exceptional system efficiency, prompting Nel to prepare for a commercial rollout projected to occur in the first half of 2026, with large-scale production targeted for 2027.

Encouraging Economic Viability

Nel's innovative approach significantly lowers capital expenditures (CAPEX) and enhances energy efficiency, which in turn reduces the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). This significant improvement is crucial for making hydrogen production more economically feasible, particularly in the context of securing necessary funding for installations and rolling out larger projects.

President and CEO Håkon Volldal emphasizes the importance of this platform, noting that a reduced LCOH could unlock new business opportunities in the clean hydrogen market that may not have been previously accessible without heavy financial support.

Modular Design for Streamlined Operations

The Next Generation Pressurized Alkaline platform features a fully modularized design. Each module is prefabricated and rigorously tested before being shipped, simplifying logistics, engineering, and installation processes. This strategy is capable of transforming traditionally complex projects into more efficient product deliveries.

Outdoors Reliability and Cost Benefits

This system is designed to function reliably in outdoor environments, eliminating the need for dedicated construction, thus lowering costs and simplifying deployment. With additional emphasis on sustainability, this innovative design is expected to be a game changer for the hydrogen production process.

EU Support and Funding Mechanisms

As part of its industrialization efforts, Nel ASA has been granted up to EUR 135 million from the EU Innovation Fund. This supportive funding will cover up to 60% of the necessary CAPEX and operational costs associated with the industrialization process.

The initial investment for the 1 GW production capacity is estimated to be around NOK 300 million prior to any grants. The EU's milestone-based funding approach is expected to facilitate the release of over EUR 10 million as an initial payment upon meeting certain project milestones. The anticipated CAPEX will be incurred over the course of 2026 and 2027, proving that investments in this innovative platform are significantly lower compared to traditional atmospheric alkaline production facilities.

Future Developments and Assessment

With the prospects of commercializing the pressurized alkaline solution, Nel ASA is also reviewing the operational assessments of its two existing 500 MW atmospheric alkaline production lines, which are currently inactive at the Herøya site. The successful implementation of the Next Generation Pressurized Alkaline platform will provide a greater insight into the future potential of these projects.
