Moona Restaurant Expands with Flagship Location in Cambridge

Moona Restaurant Expands with Flagship Location in Cambridge

Moona's Exciting New Chapter in Central Square

Moona, a well-loved restaurant famous for its vibrant Levantine flavors, is expanding with a flagship location at 750 Main Street, inside the MIT Engine Building. This exciting venture is a significant evolution from its original Inman Square establishment, targeting an even broader audience with an increased dining space.

The new restaurant presents a total of 97 seats that include a 57-seat dining room, a cozy 10-seat bar, and a 30-seat café that transforms from a café during the day to a lounge at night. This adaptable space is perfect for hosting private events, welcoming groups from 10 to 30 guests. The dinner menu will feature an array of delectable options such as a bread and dip section, mezze, large-format dishes for sharing like whole fish and lamb, all while fostering a communal dining experience typical of Levantine culture. Wine enthusiasts can delight in a carefully curated wine list emphasizing local Lebanese, Greek, and Georgian wines, while the bar will showcase creative seasonal cocktails and mocktails inspired by Levantine tastes.

Sawa Café: A Community Space

During the day, the restaurant will operate as Sawa Café ('sawa' translates to 'together'), creating a community-centric atmosphere aimed at breakfast and lunch visitors who seek to linger, work, and connect. Guests can indulge in a unique selection of sweet and savory croissants, embracing diverse flavors inspired by the Levant.

In addition, Sawa Café will introduce a pioneering Lebanese soft-serve ice cream program, featuring an array of seasonally rotating flavors such as preserved lemon and salted tahini, complemented with an assortment of toppings from confitures to chocolate bites. Lunch guests can savor sandwiches that present innovative twists on Lebanese classics, alongside an assortment of salads, dips, and a selection of pastries inspired by traditional Lebanese pantry items.

Evenings at Sahra Lounge

As day turns to night, the café evolves into Sahra Lounge ('sahra' which means 'night out'), creating a relaxed ambiance reminiscent of a Beirut speakeasy. Here, guests can unwind with a drink and light snacks, or engage in a friendly game of backgammon. This inviting environment encourages a casual and enjoyable experience without the formalities of a complete dining experience, ideal for sharing a cocktail and perhaps a bowl of olives.

Meet the Culinary Team Driving Moona's Vision

The opening of this flagship location showcases a talented team in the world of hospitality and culinary arts. Owner Mohamad El Zein continues to guide Moona's journey, building on his vision established in Inman Square. Executive Chef Scott Ryan, who has honed his skills through experience at renowned establishments like Sofra and Harvest, brings a wealth of culinary creativity to the table.

The front-of-house will be guided by General Manager Robert Taylor, known for his exceptional wine knowledge and hospitality, while Pastry Chef Giselle Miller injects creativity into the dessert menu, drawing from her background at Barbara Lynch's Menton.

In addition to this talented group, Events and Catering Director Kaila Fong adds her expertise from Weco's menu development, and Beverage Director Hassan Sawly drives the innovative beverage program shaped by his experience at various acclaimed venues.

This strong team is dedicated to continuing Moona's commitment to excellent hospitality, innovative cuisine, and vibrant flavors.

Moona is set to open its doors in December of this year, beginning with dinner service. The expected hours will operate from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM Tuesday to Thursday and 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, with a closure on Sundays and Mondays. Additional hours will follow as the restaurant settles in.

While the original Moona location at 243 Hampshire Street remains operational, the new Central Square position will transition into the flagship venue over time. For further details regarding Moona, guests can visit their official website for the latest updates and information.
