Miguel Pantoja, once on the rocky road of life choices, now lights up Northern California with his spark — quite literally. Walking out of federal prison, his mind was set as firmly as a bolt: first stop was a burger, second was a plan to transform his past into a new beginning. That path took him to UEI College in Sacramento, where every wire and bolt seemed to offer another chance.
Rewiring Life Step by Step
Leaving behind a life shaped by less-than-ideal associations, Pantoja's interest lay in the promise of metal fabrication and trade unions. However, life's detours and a misjudged sense of camaraderie led him astray. Behind bars, he taught himself welding, a skill that ironically became obsolete as machines crept in, replacing handcraftsmanship on the prison assembly line.
"Electrical work is an essential service that will always need skilled human hands," Pantoja realized as automated systems pushed manual labor aside.
Determined not to be outpaced by technological shifts, Pantoja enrolled in UEI College's Electrician Technician program immediately upon release. By 2023, he turned what could have been permanent mistakes into stepping stones, casting off the 'institutional mindset' that captivity had carved into his everyday thoughts.
From Classroom to Career
The markers of change were evident as Pantoja walked into UEI College. Structured schedules broke the chains of his previous hesitation. The campus life did more than provide educational knowledge — it rebuilt self-perception. Teachers noticed his focus and tenacity; qualities that soon set a precedent among peers.
As if life offered a new blueprint, Pantoja joined Burgelectric after graduation. His projects vary, from high-voltage substations to nitty-gritty underground utility infrastructure, proving that hands-on experience transforms classroom lessons into lucrative careers. Navigating challenges of re-entry became less daunting as his skills outshone the scars of his past.
A Blueprint for Change
Pantoja didn’t shy away from acknowledging his attorney's advice — re-entry could be a rocky road, often ending in the vicious cycle of re-offending for those with limited options. But his strategy involved preparation and perpetual self-improvement, which prevented backward slides into old ways.
"That's exactly why I enrolled in the college," he said, signaling the importance of vigilance and proactive planning.
With a career path as dynamic as electrical work, Pantoja encourages others in similar situations to plan for advancements. His long view embraces potential leadership roles, moving up to project management while never losing sight of constant personal growth.
