Merrill Creek Reservoir Celebrated for Environmental Stewardship
New Jersey DEP recognizes site for its 'Healthy Ecosystems and Habitats'
The impressive Merrill Creek Reservoir (MCR), which spans an expansive 2,700 acres, has been awarded the esteemed 2024 Governor's Environmental Excellence Award by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). This award highlights the exceptional land management and ecological efforts undertaken at the reservoir, which is part-owned by FirstEnergy's Jersey Central Power & Light electric company and FirstEnergy Pennsylvania.
Recognition of Collaborative Efforts
This honor, presented during a recent ceremony, recognizes the collaborative success achieved by MCR alongside local communities and various partners, including Terra Engineers and New Jersey Audubon. The focus of the award was the 'Healthy Ecosystems and Habitats' category, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to improving ecological health.
John Parke, an Environmental Specialist at FirstEnergy as well as an ecologist within MCR, stated, "The habitat enhancements and restorations at MCR are intended to provide substantial benefits, not just for wildlife, but for local communities too. Our habitat projects serve as shining examples of how collaboration can facilitate effective restoration and protection of our natural resources."
Environmental Enhancements at MCR
The environmental initiatives recognized by this award encompass over 173 acres of site improvements. These include significant forest stand enhancements, management of nearly 98 acres of native grasslands, and enriched pollinator gardens that provide vital support for bees and other pollinators.
Moreover, MCR has implemented innovative fish habitat improvements by skillfully repurposing autumn olive—an invasive species previously removed during grassland restoration efforts. By transforming this material into 78 underwater spider blocks and 17 fish cribs, MCR created critical habitats that offer shelter and nurturing environments for fish and other aquatic life.
The Life Within the Reservoir
Merrill Creek Reservoir is much more than just a water supply; it's a thriving ecological sanctuary. Home to more than 380 species of wildlife, including numerous endangered and threatened species, the site serves as a refuge for many fish, birds, and even rare turtles.
FirstEnergy, responsible for serving over 1.1 million customers in numerous counties, is committed to operational excellence and environmental stewardship. They emphasize the importance of preserving these vital ecosystems for future generations to enjoy.
Community Engagement and Responsibility
The efforts at MCR mirror FirstEnergy's broader vision of responsible corporate stewardship. This approach not only protects biodiversity but also enhances the quality of life for surrounding communities through improved aesthetics and recreational opportunities.
As MCR continues to maintain its status as an environmental leader, it's essential to recognize the collective impact of community involvement, innovative practices, and the respect for nature that has driven these initiatives forward.
