Marqeta Survey Highlights Shift in UK Credit Card Preferences

Marqeta Survey Highlights Shift in UK Credit Card Preferences

Revolution in Customer Loyalty for Credit Cards

As the landscape of consumer finance continues to evolve, UK consumers are increasingly focusing on personalized benefits offered by credit card providers. The insights stem from a recent survey conducted by Marqeta (NASDAQ: MQ), a cutting-edge modern card issuing platform that facilitates embedded finance solutions. Their fourth annual State of Credit report surveyed 3,000 consumers globally, including 1,000 from the UK, highlighting a significant shift in customer loyalty towards credit cards.

Consumer Demands Redefined

The findings are clear: over half (53%) of UK respondents indicated that their credit card played a crucial role in helping them financially over the past year. Surprisingly, nearly half (48%) noted that their credit cards do not offer rewards, loyalty points, or similar benefits. Among the users with multiple cards, 43% stated they would use their cards more often if better rewards were available.

Furthermore, the rise of embedded finance is increasing the demand for tailored rewards experiences in the UK. About 30% of respondents reported owning a credit card linked to a specific brand or retailer, which marks a 25% increase over the previous year. This trend reflects a growing interest in credit solutions that provide added value beyond standard financial transactions.

Changing Landscape of Customer Loyalty

Amidst increasing competition, traditional notions of customer loyalty are being redefined. Millennials, aged 28 to 43, are notably eager, with 45% planning to apply for new credit cards within the next year. Even consumers who are not currently looking to obtain a card may be enticed by attractive offers such as lucrative cash back rewards or zero-interest promotions in the initial months.

Interestingly, a quarter of participants (26%) who stopped using a credit card within the last year cited finding a more suitable card that better met their needs. This indicates a growing consumer tendency to explore options that align with their individual financial goals.

Embracing Innovation in Financial Services

The emergence of innovative financing solutions like Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) is transforming the way consumers approach credit. An impressive 63% of BNPL users in the UK indicated it helped them manage their finances over the past year, a number that increases to 70% among individuals aged 44-59. Users highlighted benefits such as improved budgeting, the convenience of transactions, and the absence of interest fees as key motivators for using BNPL services.

Moreover, consumer interest in flexible financial solutions is notable, with 44% expressing they would like a payment card capable of switching between debit, credit, and BNPL functionalities. This shift points to an increasing consumer appetite for versatility and personalized solutions in their credit experiences.

“It's essential for financial service companies to evolve with the changing market dynamics. They need to embrace personalization and flexibility to meet the new expectations of consumers,” emphasized Marcin Glogowski, SVP and Managing Director Europe and UK CEO at Marqeta.

Economic Pressures and Credit Challenges

Despite the critical role credit plays in financial well-being, the increasing interest rates pose significant challenges to UK consumers. Recent reports showcase that the average annual percentage rate (APR) for credit cards rose sharply, leading many consumers to find their debt levels unsustainable. A staggering 30% of consumers noted their credit card debt had increased compared to last year, and 74% faced difficulties in meeting the minimum payments required.

Additionally, 13% of those surveyed indicated they had missed a credit card payment in the past year, with many asserting it was their first time experiencing such a situation. These statistics underline the importance of financial solutions and credit products that reflect the realities and pressures faced by everyday consumers.

“While financial institutions have focused on risk management, there is a pressing need to include a broader demographic in credit support—those who are often overlooked,” said Glogowski. He further noted that adapting technology to analyze qualitative data will be essential in developing applications that align more closely with consumer requirements.

As technology continues to evolve, Marqeta remains committed to shaping the future of financial services to cater to diverse consumer needs. With compliance and security as foundational pillars, Marqeta has processed over $200 billion in annual payment volumes, cementing its position as a global leader in the embedded finance space.
