U.S. stocks drop sharply on budget impasse
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks fell sharply on Monday, with benchmark indexes on track to cut back on quarterly gains, as a budget impasse increased the odds of a government shutdown.

Lawmakers have until midnight to pass an emergency measure to keep the federal government running starting Tuesday, the beginning of the 2014 fiscal year.
