I knew an underwater welder who even back in the 80's was making over $150K per year, and that was pretty good money in those days.  Probably equates to somewhere close to $600-$700K these days.  But as he said, it was one tough and unpredictable job.  I do recall that one of the real problems he always mentioned was the underwater currents.
