Have you checked to see what the cost is to drill horizontal?  It might surprise you.  And your thought might be changed if the wells were in a triangle as that would then require one center well and two horizontal lines to reach the same location of the two single wells.  In some instances, it might cost more to drill a center well and then two horizontal lines from that well.
