1638Shelf Cloud goes video viral

On Monday, a shelf cloud formed accompanying a thunderstorm on the Belgian coast. While shelf clouds are not necessarily uncommon, especially in the summer months, they are a bit more rare on the coast due to the ocean's cool waters.

"Shelf clouds typically form on the front-end of an advancing thunderstorm," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Jim Andrews. "They are the lowering of a cloud base accompanied by a cool outrush."

Often described as "menacing" by those with the opportunity to view one , shelf clouds have a notable tiered look. They appear unsteady underneath and smoother toward their outer parts, according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Meghan Mussoline.

With the ability to evolve and change quickly, shelf clouds can be dangerous, bringing high winds behind them.
