NAB: Rovi signs up over 50 firms for HEVC Beta
By Jamie Beach April 10th, 2013
US firm Rovi, a provider of technology that “connects people and the entertainment they love”, has signed up more than 50 companies for its HEVC Beta Program , launched earlier this year and giving them early access to the new video compression standard .
Early beta program participants include: Korean firm Castis , a provider of media delivery and business management solutions; US firm Wohler Technologies , a supplier of audio and video monitoring solutions for the broadcast industry; Canada’s Marex Broadcast Systems , a leader in software design for the broadcast industry; and US firm MTI Film , a worldwide provider of innovative solutions for the Post-Production industry.
“We view the positive response to our beta program and the variety of companies evaluating our MainConcept HEVC SDK as a strong indication that the industry is ready to rapidly embrace the latest compression standard,” said Kanaan Jemili, SVP, Product Management, Rovi Corporation.
The new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, also known as H.265, promises to offer nearly double the compression efficiency of the previous standard, known as H.264, and therefore reduce storage and bandwidth costs, as well as support higher resolutions such as 4K.
At the centre of Rovi’s support for HEVC is the new DivX Video Service, just announced at the NAB show currently taking place in Las Vegas . DivX Video Service is an end-to-end video solution for high-quality multi-screen video delivery that is designed to integrate with and enhance TV Everywhere and over-the-top entertainment services .
