Thomas Chapman, subject of today's "100 Days of Science" had plenty of company in developing new mining processes for Arizona's copper mines.

Louis S. Cates developed the "block caving" method at the Ray Mine and new refining processes were developed at Miami and Ajo.

A  history written for the Arizona Mining Association mentions many of the innovations.

The mining curriculum at the University of Arizona returned to the  College of Engineering after Chapman's time.

It continues to do research in mining techniques and safety and houses the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources.

The institute was created by  Science Foundation Arizona and industry partners to promote "sustainable development of critical Earth materials."
