I'm not even talking about paying for the wells, I'm talking about all the work involved for the rig, pumps, crew, geologist, etc.

On the income statement link you will see that sales of oil for 2012 amounted to $169,947. There's people on this board that make more money than that from their job and that just ain't enough to make a hole with.
