All the major prevailing biometrics systems have limitations. The biometric industry is global in scope, with many competitors and customers located in US and Europe. While Asia has some companies in the biometrics arena, many of the biggest projects have been in nations installing national identification systems. Strategic focus is quite diverse, as well, with some firms specializing in the proprietary technology associated with capturing biometric information, others in providing enterprise-level integration services, and still others in offering managed or hosted services for outsourced systems. Large players in intermediate or end-use markets for biometrics (e.g. banking/financial services, security, PCs/peripherals, software/enterprise systems, and wireless equipment and services) have been active in investing in or sponsoring biometric technologies.
