Harvey Mackay (the "Swimming with Sharks" guy) is enormously wealthy. He used to write a column once a week in the business section of the paper. He said that smart people spend their money making their house somewhere that they enjoy living, not on their cars, on the theory that you spend much more time in your house than in your car. (He said, of course, if you are someone who travels a lot in the car, like a salesman, then it makes sense to go for a little luxury there.) Anyway, he literally put his money where his mouth was -- he always drove mid-size American cars, like Buicks.
