Another future business opportunity for Hollund is charcoal production for Brazil's growing iron and steel industry. The upper branches of the trees Hollund will harvest cannot be made into lumber, and portions of trees sticking out above the water line are generally rotting. However, these same portions of trees can be used for charcoal production.

With 62 pig iron mills, the state of Minais Gerais is Brazil's largest producer of steel and iron, responsible for 60% of the national production.  Minas Gerais approved a law which virtually bans the use of charcoal from deforestation by 2018.
