So - in this phI trial - one important goal is to figure out the highest dose people can tolerate. To do that - they have to push the dose up to the point where a few people can't tolerate it, then step back down to the dose right under that one and call that the maximum tolerated dose. So its not about the number of months involved - its about pushing dose up as high as they can, very closely assessing the adverse events that might occur at that dose, scaling back and creating measured milligram/kilogram dosing schedule outline for phase II trial if safety is proven. Any evidence of efficacy is a real bonus in a trial like this.
And your second question - I guess we'll know that in (my guess) about 2 years!
