Yeah the mud is used for that and it is also used to weigh the well down and to cool the bit. I think what DTL is referring to is the post you put up after Dloggold asked was that oil in the pits. You said "you tell me" with a video of dark fluid flowing into the pits from the rig that to non oilfield personal, appears to be a gusher of oil. I said if you got a closer view that I would be able to say for sure if it was oil or not to which you replied that it was mud from the broken pump. It is a little confusing to some. A simple no this is not oil, it is mud from the rig would have seemed more upfront than "you tell me". Not ranting and we all love you too Buddy!!
