In November, USA TODAY reported that CRE infections already are endemic in several U.S. population centers, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, which account for hundreds of confirmed cases. Smaller pockets of cases have been reported across much of the country, including Oregon, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and South Carolina.
Hospitals have fought these infections for years.
An outbreak of the bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae killed seven patients between 2011 and 2012 at the National Institutes of Health.
Now, with the superbugs found in 42 states, Frieden said he felt it was time to warn the public.

Detect and Protect – CDC is funding some states who are testing the use of “Detect and Protect” strategies to find germs causing healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and prevent their spread. Detect and Protect strategies include:
Tracking CRE, including use of the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), and
Prevention activities, such as those found in CDC guidelines and HAI prevention toolkits.
The CRE Prevention Toolkit lists Detect and Protect strategies for healthcare facilities.
CDC is working to better understand the true number of infections caused by these organisms in the US. CRE infections are not a nationally notifiable condition. Therefore, there is not a requirement to report to CDC. CDC collects information on CRE from two surveillance systems:
Emerging Infections Program (EIP) –
Healthcare Associated Infections Community Interface (HAIC) uses 10 sites across the country to determine which patients and community members have or are at risk for CRE and Acinetobacter.
Multi-site resistant Gram-negative Surveillance Initiative (MuGSI)
National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) – tracks healthcare–associated infections of more than 11,500 facilities nationwide.

Some 29.9 million pounds of antibiotics were sold in 2011 for
meat and poultry production, compared with the 7.7 million
sold for human use, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts,
and that number has been on the rise.

strategy and stop these infections from spreading."

Not all the species (and subspecies as well) in the gut have been identified due to the fact that most cannot
be cultured, nor is the identification process an easy procedure
There is currently an ambitious project to
identify all the flora within the gut, called the Human Microbiome Project (nihroadmap.nih.gov/hmp), hosted by
the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which comes under the US Department of Health and Human Services.
According to the NIH website, microbial cells are estimated to outnumber human cells by a factor of 10 to one
within a healthy adult. “These communities, however, remain largely unstudied, leaving almost entirely unknown
their influence upon human development, physiology, immunity, and nutrition.
To take advantage of recent technological advances, and to develop new ones, the NIH Roadmap has initiated
the Human Microbiome Project (HMP), with the mission of generating resources enabling comprehensive
characterisation of the human microbiota and analysis of its role in human health and disease.”
(Other than LcS, many other genus and species of bacterium are used as probiotics, such as the L. acidophilus
and Bifidobacterium bifidus. In fact, the choice of which probiotic to use can be mind boggling, given that
there are some 500 species (by most estimates) living in the colon.)
