I protect myself from iHell by doing the following:

I use a hosts file. Very powerful and free. In fact, I wrote a computer program that combines two hosts files and removes the duplicates. I no longer see pop-ups, advertisements and most all threats are blocked. Here are the two I use. Either one is good. If you would like a copy of the combined hosts send me a PM (PM's are free here)

Also, I use this free Firefox plugin to prevent websites from tracking me. They block around 10,000 attempts to track my Internet usage each month!
