His first well in Oklahoma struck oil, but as is popularly told, his luck didn't hold out when he came to Texas — at least at first.

After 25 dry holes in a row from 1953 to 1955, many might have given up.

But not Jack Grimm, who had vowed early on that he would become rich at age 30.

"I was ambitious," he once told the Reporter-News. "I wanted to be successful. It was important to me. It was a challenge, and I just wanted to see if I could meet the challenge. Jackie was willing to face that challenge with me. When you first finish college, you don't have much to lose, anyway."

That 26th hole was to be possibly his last venture, but "with one last try, oil flowed again," according to his New York Times obituary.
