Announcement – The Passing of Dr. John Wesley Commissiong (John Commissiong)
It is with deep sadness that Amarantus BioScience announces the passing of Dr. John Wesley Commissiong, who died peacefully on Friday, September 12, 2025, in St. John’s, Antigua, after a battle with cancer.
John dedicated his life to advancing neuroscience through his work at McGill University, the NIH, and the biotechnology industry. His pioneering research into the imperative role of astrocytes in neurobiology led to his crowning achievement: the discovery of the neurotrophic factor MANF, now studied worldwide for its potential in Parkinson’s disease, vision loss, aging, and longevity.
He is remembered as a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, and as a world-renowned neuroscientist whose body of work added significant knowledge to his field. A Service of Thanksgiving will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at Ebenezer Methodist Church in St. John’s, Antigua.
A Celebration of Life Service will follow in New York City on October 4th, 2025 from 2-5pm EDT. Those wishing to attend in New York City may contact me additional details.
May he rest in the Lord’s eternal peace.
