US Household Power Bills Surge 10% as Tariffs, Policy Changes Bite

American households are paying higher power bills as the consequences of President Donald Trump’s controversial tariffs and renewable energy rollbacks begin to take effect. According to a recent report published by Climate Power, a Washington D.C.-based climate advocacy group, household energy bills across the country have surged by an average of 10% since President Trump assumed office.

This contradicts Trump’s campaign promise to reduce energy prices in the U.S. as part of his “Energy Dominance” agenda and underscores the repercussions the current GOP administration’s policies have had on the American energy landscape.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright noted that the country’s rising energy costs could potentially lower the GOP’s odds during the upcoming midterms, but laid blame for the 10% increase in energy costs on the Democratic Party. According to Wright, policies from the Obama-Biden era began the chain of reactions that resulted in the ongoing surge in energy prices, but the Trump administration is receiving blame because it is currently in control.

However, data shows that the recent rise in household energy costs began when President Trump was elected for a second term, and the authors of the recent report highlighted how decisions and policies passed by the GOP administration, coupled with the proliferation of data centers across the country, have largely been responsible for the hike in energy costs.

Studies show that President Trump’s decidedly anti-green energy, pro-fossil fuel policies will cause energy prices to jump, with one report published by climate think tank Energy Innovation in July noting that the GOP administration’s decision to roll back the previous administration’s renewable energy incentives could cause wholesale energy prices to surge by up to 74%.

The Big Beautiful Bill also dealt a significant blow to American clean energy, hastening the expiry of green energy subsidies and tax credit programs that were critical to alleviating the astronomical costs involved in launching new green energy projects, and injecting significant uncertainty in an industry largely reliant on venture funding for capital.

After analyzing data collected by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the Climate Power report found that the energy price increases predicted by Energy Innovation and other experts are already occurring.

Climate Power senior advisor Jesse Lee explains that the GOP is currently “fueling an energy crisis” and forcing Americans to pay higher utility bills, a major betrayal of the voters who supported the GOP partly based on promises of reduced energy bills. The irony is stark: while the administration promised energy independence and lower costs, its policy reversals are delivering precisely the opposite outcome, leaving American families to shoulder the financial burden of ideologically driven energy decisions that prioritize fossil fuel interests over consumer affordability.

Affordability was also being boosted by EV incentives for buyers of vehicles from firms like Bollinger Innovations, Inc. (NASDAQ: BINI). Now those incentives are being halted by the GOP administration and consumers will have to dig deeper into their pockets to acquire these climate-friendly BEVs.
