The Argentinean football player, Lionel Messi has proven he is a Wonder Boy since his adolescence and is currently considered by many to be the most exciting young professional player in the world. Adversity is not alien to him. As the sufferer of a hormone deficiency since his childhood, Leo has not allowed the illness become an obstacle in his career.

Born in Rosario, Argentina, Mr. Messi grew fond of football when he was a small boy, playing in the local teams Grandoli and Newell´s Old Boys. By the age of 17 he was on the other side of the world as a scorer for Barcelona FC, one of the best-known professional football teams in the world. He has been through a lot since he left his hometown, including getting treatment for his disease when he was 13 years old.

A dream comes true

In Barcelona, Mr. Messi continued to triumph over adversity, playing for the Barca B team when he was a young man. Scoring an average of one goal per match, he was swiftly promoted to the professional level. He debuted in the first team of Barcelona FC in 2004 as the third youngest player in the team.

During that season, Mr. Messi participated in nine matches and played his first UEFA Champions League match against Albacete Balompié, which was defeated 2-0 after Messi scored his first goal a minute after entering the field.

In June 2005, after rejecting an offer from the Spanish National Team and with the objective of fulfilling a personal dream, Mr. Messi joined the Argentinean team for the U-20 Cup. During that successful year for Argentina, the team participated in the U-20 World Cup in Holland, a championship that resulted in the Golden Boot award as top goal scorer, with six goals scored, and the Golden Boot for the best player of the match.

Barcelona fans were thrilled to hear that the young Messi has recently renewed his contract with Barcelona FC until 2010, thus continuing on the path that will lead him to becoming one of Europe’s greatest football stars.
