About 90% of people do not appeal the denial of payments. Among Medicare recipients, it's 95%. It was just revealed that United used an AI to deny coverage, KNOWING that the algorithm was wrong 90% of the time. This was instituted by the now-former CEO.
I have a friend whose wife went into labor early and needed a Caesarean. Because this was on a holiday weekend, the hospital used the on-call anesthesiologist who was out of network -- the only anesthesiologist on call and available to do this. His health insurance company denied coverage because -- drumroll -- they did not get pre-authorization for emergency care, on a holiday weekend when there would have been no one to authorize it. He appealed the over-$5000 bill and won after months of filing papers.
This is why people hate health insurance companies.
