Great that 5000 girls and young women did not contract HIV, of course. 100% success.
But what percentage of those women and girls would have been infected with HIV had they not gotten the vaccine? In other words, how many people did they protect? I know that the majority of the people living with HIV in Africa are women. But I've also read that the risk of HIV transmission through receptive vaginal sex is 0.08% (equivalent to 1 transmission per 1,250 exposures). Anal sex of course is more dangerous. But do we know how many of those women and girls -- who volunteered for the vaccine trial -- would have been likely to have unprotected sex of any kind with men who carry HIV?
All I'm saying is that in the end that big number of 5000 successful vaccinations might be an extremely small sample size.
