I believe it varies depending on the security firms you use. For example, I typically choose Market orders for buying large amounts like 25K, 60K, 80K, and 100K shares through EMPOWER. However, ETRADE and TD/CS restrict me to using Limit orders for such transactions. So, I simply select the higher limit to complete the purchase.
