Re: chazzledazzle #144187
I realized quickly an error in my logic…
“Could it be used as a kind of Prep drug for everyone, but specifically immune challenged folks, or perhaps the elderly. Could it eliminate the underlying causes ME/CFS, or downstream effects of adolescent EBV?”

The Delta 32 deletion (No chemokine receptor 5). Those with no CCR5 due to deletion, would not realize any effect, I guess.
Sorry it took a minute to look up a little evidence of those who LL, as a CCR5 cannot help, or maybe in less similar ways is approximately 1% of total N in new populations, and up to 20-30% of Europeans that have descended from those that survived the Black Death.
“Conclusion
The allele frequency of CCR5-Δ32 observed for new population is 1% which is compared with the other populations. The polymorphism CCR5-Δ32 is primarily found in European population. Compared to our data, frequency of delta 32 deletion is observed at high frequency in European populations. Our data of delta 32 deletion is significantly different from Caucasians (p<0.00000001), Africans (p<0.01458) and Europeans (p< 0.00000001).”

And one other…
“Methods
In 2002, DNA analysis of 100 randomly selected individuals from each of the 10 isolated communities of 5 Croatian islands (Susak, Rab, Vis, Lastovo, and Mljet) showed high levels of 3-generational endogamy, indicating limited gene flow. Five of the communities were decimated by epidemics of unknown cause between 1449-1456, while the other 5 villages remained unaffected. Genotyping of the CCR5 gene was performed using the polymerase chain reaction method with primers flanking the region containing 32-bp deletion.
Results
The frequency of CCR5Δ32 in the 5 villages affected by the epidemic was 6.1-10.0%, and 1.0-3.8% in the 5 unaffected villages. The Δ32 mutation was found in 71 of 916 alleles among the individuals from the affected villages (7.5%), and in 24 of 968 alleles in unaffected villages (2.5%, χ2 = 27.3, P < 10−6).”

So no. LL cannot be a PreP for all humans, if at all. But perhaps from between 70-99%, of Mother Earth's children. The 20-30% is uncited here, but from my initial google query, and Sweden, Finland etc, have a higher percentage. Wonder if they went to cold land to get away from the Black Death.
Pretty cool to think about.
