Florida Democrats logged a closer than expected loss in the special election for Florida's House District 118.
The district, which is a Trump +17 district and DeSantis +37 district, heavily leans Republican. During the special election, however, the Democratic nominee, Johnny Gonzalo Farias, lost by only 6%, running much closer than expected in a traditionally Republican seat with a large Cuban population. While overall turnout in the special election was only about 7%, Democrats outpaced Republicans in turnout, in a significant shift from prior election cycles.
