Stub - In a stub buyout, the bidders buy only the majority of the target company and leave a portion--known as a stub--in shareholders' hands. The equity could be the existing shares, or it could be a stake of newly issued equity. It allows the buyout group to call the shots and attempt to turn around the company, but lets the public shareholders enjoy the fruits of their labor.
