i have thought about this whole communication thing. on the one hand, they raised it as an important item at the last call a few months ago - and said there would be a new approach that shareholders liked better - so clearly they knew shareholders cared about it, and that it should be a priority. but then there is dead silence for 3 months. why?
i think this flows to the top, to Tanya Urbach. If you look at what she does, her day job is a wealth manager / family office manager / lawyer. these are all defensive roles - with defending against risk at it's core. and again, this is not her day job. how much time does she spend on it? who knows - but again, she has a full time job that i'm sure requires most of her time and attention.
Antonio would be the natural person to communicate - but he's a young guy, who never should have to wear the president's hat (he's an accountant). i don't blame him for being thrust in the wrong role. some may disagree with me here - but you don't pull the ballboy off the sideline when Nadal gets hurt, and then get mad at him when Djokovic thrashes him. he trained in accounting - crunching the numbers in the backroom - not leading and communicating - the opposite of what is required of a CEO. and this is not an "on the job training" gig we have - running a pre-revenue biotech.
Our current challenge remains straightforward in my mind - we have a leadership vacuum. And at the very top, we have someone who is reluctant to take risk - because that's the animal she is - and why she was brought in to begin with - to defend against Nader's fraudulent and criminal activities. But a risk taker is exactly what we need - because running a business is about taking smart risks to move forward.
i'm trying to be more positive toward this investment - as it's been an emotional drain watching it over the years. so i'll end by saying i don't blame Tanya and Antonio for being who they are - we just have the wrong people steering this ship. and until we find a new captain, i don't expect much in terms of progress or communication. but i have to think we're close to finding that person - so there's my positive spin. hope everyone has a great weekend.
