the board demoted him, cut his salary, denied him his bonus and clawed back options.
the board clearly didn't think he was CEO material. not sure what you saw in cyrus as a potential ceo. i think he was a nice guy, well-intentioned, reasonably intelligent and a likely a valuable employee. but you need a whole lot more than that to run a company, especially a company with a very small staff and facing monumental challenges. cyrus had only worked directly in pharma for a short time, less than 10 years. and some of that time was not especially relevant. he had very little experience in pharma. i feel like he was 10-20 years short of being qualified to be ceo.
most companies hiring a ceo look for... a ceo. they want a ceo who has been a ceo for a number of years and has actually run companies. that seems particularly important for a company is facing significant challenges.
i like some things cyrus did. he reprioritized the pipeline... using his skillset from his amgen days. and he organized and presented a wonderful investor presentation. but i feel like that is about all he had to offer. he did for cytodyn what he did for amgen.
and i don't even agree with the pipeline reprioritization.
cytodyn needs a ceo who has been a ceo, or has extensive executive-level experience.
and because cytodyn has a very limited staff, the ceo needs to have significant regulatory filing experience and experience leading clincial development. cyrus has very limited leadership experience, no regulatory experience and no clinical development experience.
