Here the Keck school is opining that a rogue protein (GRP78) previously developed according to the natural order of our DNA - RETURNS to the cell nucleus and mutinously takes command and control of protein design and production away from the natural order of DNA command and control?
GRP78 does not design or produce the proteins. It binds to the proteins and stabilizes the structure so they can attain their given shape.

But when cells are under stress, the chaperone protein migrates to the cell’s nucleus, where it alters gene activities and changes the behavior of the cell, allowing the cancer cells to become more mobile and invasive.
When they say alters gene activities they are talking about the regulation of expression of proteins. Which many proteins do including CCR5.
