The lack of fully developed technology. A max range of 120 miles might be suitable for some drivers but if they needed to drive further the lack of charging stations would doom them. So most consumers were not ready to plunk down their cash. With small production numbers the retail price would likely be well over $60,000. In the late 90's you could buy a Porsche 911 Carrera for that kind of money.
Even the initial Tesla's were plagued with catching on fire and still do to this day. Baby steps of hybrid cars were needed first to gain consumer acceptance.
