Queen Elizabeth II has died aged 96
Buckingham Palace confirms that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died on Thursday at the age of 96.
"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow," a statement from Buckingham Palace said.
Britain’s new monarch will be known as King Charles III.
At age 73, he is the oldest person to ever assume the British throne.
