I believe Rory said they learned during the beta that people will pay more for certain things. Premium time slots, ads, etc.
Stands to reason. If you have 1,000s of vendors, not everyone can be hosting an event at the same time nor can you put everyone at the top of the page.
This was from the Q1 earnings call...
It's naïve to think there is only one way to make money on MARKET. Thanks for pointing out even the Big Brands will be battling for space. Oh and they have the money to do so.
