That's what I was trying to convey to him -- that 99% of readers, who might otherwise welcome some of his points, would do the same.

In a peer-reviewed published paper, many of us are willing to wade into a dense read because we know it's fact-based and, hopefully, worth the time. But lengthy posts on a largely anonymous message board don't have the same credibility so nobody will invest that kind of time, and it's unreasonable to expect others to give the author that kind of investment.

I relish etymology and one of my favorite words is "slang" because it simply means 'short language.' I'm a big fan of brevity and efficiency.
