I use Etrade and my transfers from the bank to the brokerage are immediate and I can trade in seconds. I was a bank teller years ago and banks do like to sit on cash as long as they can, but as tellers, we used to be able to clear a check in a day if we knew and liked the customer, whereas an out of state check could have had a 5 day hold if we wanted it to.
