Not necessarily better to be terminated than resign, but it depends what his contract says. "Terminated" means fired. Look, you can call yourself an Executive Assistant if that makes you feel better, but the former word for it (secretary) is still what it is, it's just putting lipstick on the pig, as they say. Garbage man and sanitation engineer...you see my point.
Was he terminated for cause? We don't know.
Companies can mutually agree that someone will willingly step down (resign) and they can still get a golden parachute. Of course there is usually going to be a tight NDA. I have dealt with many of those when it comes to employment and the end of people's time at a company, including my own.
We just have no facts right now, but again, "terminated" is synonymous with "fired".
