You are insistent on conflating mutation with selection. In that absence of selective pressures, mutation occurs but does not necessarily produce a more fit organism, better able to survive and reproduce.
Witness the island effect, the classic example of mutation and evolution without the pressure of predation.
In Africa, the ostrich evolved to survive predation by lions, leopards and hyenas with great speed and armored toes able kick through a car door.
In Mauritius, without significant predators, the world witnessed the development of the dodo.
