CDIddy,
The reinfection rates with omicron reported from South Africa are higher than historical norms. I have seen a range of reinfection rates, varying with time since previous infection, age, gender, immune suppression.
Children at 0.2%, middle aged adults at 1.2% and elderly or immune suppressed at 2+%.
Regardless of reinfection rate, the severity of subsequent infections will be a major determinant of the impact from omicron. The initial reports indicate low virulence, as opposed to the massive risk of reinfection and virulence with delta reinfection. Manaus Brazil had seroconversion from the initial covid wave at ~80%, but was nonetheless devastated by delta.
Beyond reinfection, a huge proportion of the US and the world remains unvaccinated and open to the full impact of delta or omicron.
