Facebook makes more advertising $ when you consume more content. The best way to keep you engaged is to elicit an emotional reaction. Getting an emotional reaction drives more hate speech content, conspiracy theories, disinformation, personal attacks.
Covid 19 disinformation is singled out on Facebook because it is a profit driver. If we all agreed that the vaccines were safe (they are), we would not consume as much Facebook content.
I think many of us grew up (pre-internet) with the logic that “where there’s smoke, there’s fire.” The internet and social media algorithms make it very easy to create a lot of personalized smoke (vaccines are bad) without an actual fire.
