An interesting idea. But it's rather cumbersome to get the stock certificates and not very liquid in terms of selling if the stock takes a big dip or dive and you want to sell or if you just want to sell some shares for other reasons.

Stock certificates can be expensive:
Be aware, though, that this request for stock certificates usually comes with a fee. Some brokers can charge as much as $500 for producing a piece of paper that certifies ownership of a number of shares.

Selling stock certificate shares:
There's a Direct Registration System (DRS) with the transfer agent that might make selling the shares easier (after someone has already gone to the trouble of getting the certificates).
