I am DEFINITELY a doctor, scientist, nor even an armchair medical analyst, but my simple understanding is that Mercks' drug is an antiviral.
Merck's and Pfitzner's covid pill coming reasonably soon does not really correlate to us. Being an immuno-modulator that restores balance to the immune system is why we could see this getting adopted in so many ways for so many indications.
One of the biggest pluses for me has been the lack of side effects reported to date.
Anyway, this is what I see out of all this.
